Step 1

Download a new keyboard app from the Play Store. If you aren’t sure of your choices, you can try the TouchPal X Keyboard or the free version of SwiftKey Keyboard for Android.

Step 2

Install the keyboard app on your device then go to “Settings” and select “Locale and Text”. If you’re running on the latest version of Android OS, you can go to “Settings” > “Language and Input” or “Language and Keyboard”.

Step 3

Scroll down until you see your list of installed keyboards. Check the box next to the keyboard app that you have recently downloaded.

Step 4

Return to “Language and Input” and choose “Select Input Method”. This time, you’re about to select the keyboard that you want to use as default keyboard. Remember, your default keyboard will be the first one to appear every time you type a text. So, better choose the one that you’re most comfortable with.

However, in this guide, you can try using the keyboard app that you’ve downloaded from step one as your default keyboard (ex. TouchPal X). After you’re done, go back to your home screen and proceed to the next step.

Step 5

Open your messaging or memo app and try to type any word or text. You will know if you have succeeded in replacing your default Android keyboard because the keyboard that will appear on your screen will be TouchPal X.

Now, if you want to use the other keyboards that you have on your device, just go back to your messaging app and long-press on the input portion of your screen. For devices with the latest Android OS versions, simply press the small keyboard icon on the notification area. After which, select “Input Method” then choose the keyboard that you want to use and that’s it. Just repeat the steps again to switch to another keyboard.
