Back Up Your VCard Contacts to Excel for Mac With This Cool Workaround

Exporting VCards to Excel is a good way to create a backup of your contacts, letting you keep contact data in an easily searchable spreadsheet. However, neither the Mac or Windows versions of Excel allow you to import VCard files natively. To import a VCard to Excel, you must first generate a Comma Separated Variable file from the card’s contents, as CSV files can be read by Excel. You can generate the necessary file using Gmail, which has the ability to both import VCards and export data to CSV.

Create CSV File

Open the Gmail webpage and click on the “Sign In” button. Enter your username and password and then click “Sign In” to access your Gmail account.
Click “Gmail” and then select “Contacts” from the drop-down list. Click on the “More” button and then on “Import” to open the “Import Contacts” dialog box.
Click the “Choose File” button and select the VCard file you want to import. Click “Open” and then “Import” to import the VCard’s contents into Gmail.
Check the box next to the contact you wish to import and then click on “More.” Select “Export” from the drop-down menu to open the “Export Contacts” dialog box.
Select “Selected Contacts” from the “Which Contacts Do You Want To Export?” menu, and select “Outlook CSV” from the “Which Export Format?” menu. Click “Export” to export your contact to CSV.

Import Into Excel

Open Excel for Mac. Click on “File” and then “New” to open up a new worksheet.
Click on “File” and then “Import.” Select “CSV File” from the Import menu and then click the “Import” button. Select the CSV file you created and then click “Get Data” to run the Text Import Wizard.
Click the “Delimited” radio button and ensure that the “Start Import At Row” field is set to “1.” Click “Next” to move on to the next page of the wizard.
Check the “Comma” box in the Delimiters menu. This tells Excel that each piece of cell data in the CSV file is separated by commas. Click “Next” to continue, and then click “Finish” on the final screen of the wizard to open the Import Data dialog box.
Select “Existing Sheet” and then click “OK” to finish importing your contact into Excel.

The contact’s information will display in spreadsheet format. Once opened in Excel, you can save, edit or otherwise manipulate the contact information as you would any other piece of spreadsheet data.
