The Domain Name System (DNS) is one of the fundamental technologies behind computer networking. DNS helps identify nodes on a network by mapping human-readable names to machine-readable addresses. A common analogy with DNS is that it serves as the phone book for the Internet. In the same way phone books provide a way to contact someone using their name, DNS provides a way to contact a node on the Internet by using a name associated with the machine.
